CDS HISTORY- CDS OF INDIA

Ø The "Combined Defence Services" Examination is conducted twice a year by the Union Public Service Commission for recruitment into the Indian Military Academy, Officers Training Academy, Indian Naval Academy and Indian Air Force Academy.

Ø The Notification for the examination is usually released in the months of October and June, and the examinations are conducted in February and November respectively. Only unmarried graduates are eligible to sit for the exam. Successful candidates are admitted into the respective Academies after an interview conducted by the Services Selection Board (SSB).

CDS Eligibility

QUALIFICATION EDUCATION

As per details given below –

1- Indian Military Academy and Officers' Training Academy:        Aspirants passed class of Degree of any recognized University or equivalent.

2- Naval Academy:        Aspirants passed class of Degree in Engineering from any recognised University.

3- Air Force Academy:        Aspirants passed class of Degree of a recognized University (with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level) or Bachelor of Engineering from any recognized University.

NOTE

Aspirants who are studying in final year Degree Course and yet to pass final year degree examination or equivalent examination can also apply for the Examination, but they will be required to submit proof of passing the Degree Examination or equivalent examination by the specified dates.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS

Aspirants must be physically fit according to physical standards for admission to Combined Defence Services Examination (I), 2020 as per guidelines given in Appendix-IV.

AGE CALCULATOR-CDS AGE LIMIT

As per details given below –

1- For CDS IMA —Unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 2nd January, 1997 and not later than 1st January, 2002 only are eligible.

 2- For Indian Naval Academy—Unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 2nd January, 1997 and not later than 1st January, 2002 only are eligible.

 3- For Air Force Academy— 20 to 24 years as on 1st January, 2021 i.e. born not earlier than 2nd January, 1997 and not later than 1st January, 2001 (Upper age limit for candidates holding valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by DGCA (India) is relaxable up to 26 years i.e. born not earlier than 2nd January, 1995 and not later than 1st January, 2001) only are eligible.

 Note

 Candidate below 25 years of age must be unmarried. Marriage is not permitted during training. Married candidates above 25 years of age are eligible to apply but during training period they will neither be provided married accommodation nor can they live with family out of the premises.

 4- For Officers' Training Academy—(SSC Course for men) unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 2nd January, 1996 and not later than 1st January, 2002 only are eligible.

 5- For Officers' Training Academy—(SSC Women Non-Technical Course) Unmarried women, issueless widows who have not remarried and issueless divorcees (in possession of divorce documents) who have not remarried are eligible. They should have been born not earlier than 2nd January, 1996 and not later than 1st January, 2002.

 NOTE

 Male divorcee/widower candidates cannot be treated as unmarried male for the purpose of their admission in IMA/INA/AFA/OTA, Chennai courses and accordingly they are not eligible for these courses.

RELAXATION TECHNIQUES

As per Govt. rules age relaxation is applicable for said post to all reserved category candidates for CDS- 1/ 2020 Application Form/ UPSC 2020 CDS -1 Notification, Apply Online.

6. Brigadier Level 13A:        Rs. 1,39,600-2,17,600/-.

7. Major General Level 14:      Rs. 1,44,200-2,18,200/-.

APPLICATION FEE PROCEDUR/APPLICATION FEE CONCESSION

For sarkari naukri vacancy a non- refundable application fee is to be paid by the candidates as per rules. An amount of Rs.200/- by General/EWS & OBC candidates to be paid either by depositing the money in any Branch of SBI by cash, or by using net banking facility of SBI, State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur/State Bank of Hyderabad/State Bank of Mysore/State Bank of Patiala /State Bank of Travancore or by using Visa/Master Credit/Debit Card.

RESERVATION

SELECTION PROCESS/SELECTION SORT

Aspirants who are screened for applicability /eligibility are being selected as per organization policy/rules depending on the basis of their performance in written exam, SSB Interview and Medical Examination.

CDS Interview

Ø Stage II Comprises of Interview, Group Testing Officer Tasks, Psychology Tests and the Conference. These tests are conducted over 4 days. The details of these tests are given on the website www.joinindianarmy.nic.in.

Ø The personality of a candidate is assessed by three different assessors viz. The Interviewing Officer (IO), Group Testing Officer (GTO) and the Psychologist. There are no separate weightage for each test. The marks are allotted by assessors only after taking into consideration the performance of the candidate holistically in the entire test. In addition, marks for Conference are also allotted based on the initial performance of the Candidate in the three techniques and decision of the Board. All these have equal weightage.

Ø The various tests of IO, GTO and Psych are designed to bring out the presence/ absence of Officer Like Qualities and their trainability in a candidate. Accordingly candidates are Recommended or Not Recommended at the SSB.

CDS Written Exam Cut off  

The Union Public Service Commission shall prepare a list of candidates who obtain the minimum qualifying marks in the written examination as fixed by the Commission in their discretion. Candidates who are declared successful in the written exam will be detailed for intelligence and personality test at the Service Selection Board based on their preference by the respective service HQ.

The Competitive examination comprises-

a- Written examination as shown in para 2 below.

b- Interview for intelligence and personality test (vide Part ‘B’ of this Appendix) of such candidates as may be called for interview at one of the Services Selection Centres.

2. The subjects of the written examination, the time allowed and the maximum marks allotted to each subject available in notification.

CDS Negative Marking

Aspirants should note that there will be penalty (Negative Marking) for wrong answers marked by a candidate in the Objective Type Question Papers.
         
CDS Medical Test

Ø To be deemed ‘Medically fit’, a candidate must be in good physical and mental health and free from any disease/syndrome/disability likely to interfere with the efficient performance of military duties in any terrain, climate, season including sea and air, in remote areas, in austere conditions with no medical aid. Candidate also should be free of medical conditions which require frequent visit to medical facilities and use of any aid / drugs.

Ø Success at the examination confers no right of admission to the Indian Military Academy, Indian Naval Academy, Air Force Academy or the Officers' Training Academy as the case may be. The final selection will be made in order of merit subject to medical fitness and suitability in all other respects and number of vacancies available.      

CDS Training Period  

Ø Selected aspirants will be enrolled as Gentleman/Lady Cadets and will undergo a course of training at the Officers’ Academy for an approximate period of 49 Weeks.

Ø On successful completion of training Gentleman/Lady Cadets are granted Short Service Commission in the rank of Lt.

Ø Aspirants must undertake not to marry until they complete their full training. A candidate who marries subsequent to the date of his application, through successful at the written examination or service Selection Board interview of medical examination will not be eligible for training. A candidate, who marries during this period, shall be discharged and will be liable to refund all expenditure incurred on him by the Government.

 CDS Training of selected aspirants will be carried out at Indian Military Academy (DE) Course, Dehradun, Indian Naval Academy, Ezhimala Course, Air Force Academy (Pre-Flying) Course, Hyderabad and SSC (NT) Course at OTA, Chennai.

What are CDS and NDA?

 NDA exam is to select student to NDA and Naval Academy (12th level exam) for Graduate studies and training whereas through CDS graduates (graduate level exam) are selected directly to military academies like IMA, OTA, AFA and Naval Academy.

Which exam is tough CDS or NDA?
The National Defence Academy (NDA) and the Combined Defence Services (CDS) Exams are gateways to tri-services of the Indian Armed Forces. Though both the exams are conducted by the Union Public Service Commission.

3- Air Force Academy:      20 to 24 years as on 1st January, 2020 i.e. born not earlier than 2nd January, 1996 and not later than 1st January, 2000 (Upper age limit for candidates holding valid and current Commercial Pilot Licence issued by DGCA (India) is relaxable upto 26 years. i.e. born not earlier than 2nd January, 1994 and not later than 1st January, 2000) only are eligible.

Note:        Candidate below 25 years of age must be unmarried. Marriage is not permitted during training. Married candidates above 25 years of age are eligible to apply but during training period they will neither be provided married accommodation nor can they live with family out of the premises.

4- Officers' Training Academy - (SSC Course for men):     Unmarried male candidates born not earlier than 2nd January, 1995 and not later than 1st January, 2001 only are eligible.

5- Officers' Training Academy- (SSC Women Non-Technical Course):   Unmarried women, issue less widows who have not remarried and issueless divorcees (in possession of divorce documents) who have not remarried are eligible. They should have been born not earlier than 2nd January, 1995 and not later than 1st January, 2001.

NOTE:    Male divorcee/widower candidates cannot be treated as unmarried male for the purpose of their admission in IMA/INA/AFA courses and accordingly they are not eligible for these courses.

AGE RELAXATION:      As per Govt. rules age relaxation is applicable for said post to all reserved category candidates for CDS- 1/ 2019 Application Form/ UPSC 2019 CDS -1 Notification, Apply Online.

PAY SCALE:      As per Govt. rules - Rs. 15600-39100/- + Grade Pay Rs.5400/- old scale -

1. Lieutenant Level -10:   Rs. 10 56,100 – 1,77,500/-.

2. Captain Level – 10B:     Rs. 10 B 6,13,00-1,93,900/-.

3. Major Level - 11:     Rs. 11 6,94,00 – 2,07,200/-.

4. Lieutenant Colonel Level 12A:     Rs. 1,21,200 – 2,12400/-.

5. Colonel Level 13:     Rs. 1,30,600-2, 15,900/-.

6. Brigadier Level 13A:        Rs. 1,39,600-2,17,600/-.

7. Major General Level 14:      Rs. 1,44,200-2,18,200/-.

REQUIRED APPLICATION FEE:       For said vacancy a non- refundable application fee is to be paid by the candidates as per rules. An amount of Rs.200/- by General & OBC candidates to be paid either by depositing the money in any Branch of SBI by cash, or by using net banking facility of SBI, State Bank of Bikaner & Jaipur/State Bank of Hyderabad/State Bank of Mysore/State Bank of Patiala /State Bank of Travancore or by using Visa/Master Credit/Debit Card.

Female/SC/ST candidates are exempted from paying of fee.

SELECTION PROCESS:      Applicants who are screened for applicability /eligibility are being selected as per organization policy/rules depending on the basis of their performance in written exam, SSB Interview and Medical Examination.

NOTE:     Applicants should note that there will be a ceiling on the number of candidates allotted to each of the centres except Chennai, Delhi, Dispur, Kolkata and Nagpur. Allotment of Centres will be on the first-apply-first-allot basis and once the capacity of a particular centre is attained, the same will be frozen.

1. Before applying candidates have to scan photo and signature in .jpg format with file not exceeding 40 KB each and not less than 3 KB for Photo and 1 KB for Signature.

3. Log on to the website www.upsconline.nic.in

4. Click on the link “ONLINE APPLICATION FOR VARIOUS EXAMINATIONS OF UPSC”.

5. Select the appropriate Post and click on “Click Here (Part -I)”.

6. Fill in all the mandatory fields like name, gender, etc and click on “Continue”.

7. System will generate Registration-Id, retain it for further use.

8. Make payment as mentioned in application fee and retain the details for entering in Part -II registration.

9. Again re login and click on “Click Here (Part-II)”.

10. Login by using Registration-Id & date of birth.

11. Fill in all the required details and upload scanned photo and signature and click on “Submit” Button.

12. After submission of Online Application take print out of finally submitted application and retain it for future reference.
